Currently, Internet providers provide internet through fiber optic cable services. There are lots of pros and cons. Where we are able to share data without any interruption while its architecture cost is very high and it is also not feasible at Far-flung places.

Since Airtel is facing huge competition in the Telecom sector, and it was their huge importance to bring some new concepts and approaches to gain its legacy against JIO.You can read this article click here. To overcome this Bharti Enterprises bought a 45% stack in UK's OneWeb for $500m.This bid was placed in July 2020 and won it recently.

You might have not heard about OneWeb but I am sure you have heard of Starlink a project by SpaceX company owned by Elon Musk. OneWeb was founded in the United Kingdom.OneWeb has proposed a mega-constellation of satellites in low earth orbit deliver affordable wireless internet services to anywhere in the world. They had decided to launch 650 satellites in the first phase and 1980 satellites in the second phase. By March 2020, it has already launched 74 satellites in the initial constellation.

But on 27 March 2020, OneWeb has filed for bankruptcy. It faced a crunch amidst difficulties raising capital to complete the build and deployment of the rest of the remaining network. But the UK government has given them some time and support them to avoid bankruptcy by finding investors.
Currently, OneWeb has a 45 percent stack of the UK government, a 45 percent stack recently bought by Airtel. Existing shareholders including Hughes, Qualcomm, and Virgin Group will keep the balance 10 percent.

Why the United Kingdom is taking so much interest in a private company? The United Kingdom is more interested in supporting OneWeb to form the basis for a new national navigation system after the European Union froze Britain out of the most secure elements of the bloc's project, called Galileo.

Why Airtel wants to Join OneWeb?  Although we have connected 80 percent of the population with telecom Networks it is yet not possible to cover half of the world population with Internet facility. Airtel beings one of the largest telecom operators in both India and Africa combined is hoping to enrich their network services all over the world through Space Internet services. It's difficult to achieve connectivity across several parts of the country such as the Nicobar Islands, desert, or many more through conventional cable or terrestrial radio connectivity Systems.

Bharti Enterprises will mainly ground tests in south Asia and the Sub-Saharan Africa region for OneWeb products, services, and applications. They have a plan to deploy these services by 2022.

OneWeb's platform will help to reduce the digital divide by providing high-speed internet and broadband access to the poor and hard-to-reach rural area. Since now there are many competitors already available in this service including Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink Project or Jeff Bezos's Amazon-linked Project Kuiper let's see Bharti Airtel can give a tough competition or not.

What is your view will Airtel gain its legacy back?
