The government has declared Gangetic Dolphin as India's national animal. Dolphins have been included in schedule I of the Indian Wild Life(Protection) Act 1972.

The Gangetic river dolphins can only live in freshwater, they are blind and catches prey using ultrasonic sound waves. Its Scientific name is platanista gangetica.

In a move aiming to preserve the ecology and to promote tourism, the National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG) has launched "Dolphin Jalaj Safari" at six places across the country. They are initially started in Bijnor, Brijghat, Prayagraj, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Kahalgaon in Bihar, Bandel in West Bengal.

In Uttar Pradesh Bijnor, the dolphin safari has been opened at Haiderpur wetland in Ganga. As of now, there are 36 dolphins in Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary that comprises of five District Bijnor, Amroha, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Hapur. Ganga River dolphins live in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river system spanning three countries; Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.

This is the first of its kind initiative in the country. The government declared the dedicated day on October 5 as Gangetic Dolphin Day.

The trained volunteers also are known as 'Ganga Prahis' will take the tourist to these tourist sites by boat to view the mammals. Many of you still think it is fish, of course not it is a mammal. Apart from dolphins, tourist will also get a short view of Ghariyal which are found in good number in these regions.

A new campaign called "My Ganga My Dolphin" was also launched on this occasion in a move aimed at conducting a dolphin census in a 250-km stretch from Bijnor to Narora in BuladndShahr.

Why Government is taking seriously to save the Ganga Dolphin?

Aquatic life is an indicator of the health of the river ecosystem. As the Gangetic dolphin is at top of the food chain, means it is a tertiary consumer. which is responsible for maintaining the river ecosystem by consuming small fishes. If they don't do so these small fishes will contaminate the river body. protecting the species and its habitat will ensure the conservation of aquatic lives of the river. Apart from this Gangetic Dolphin are a natural indicator of water freshness.
